KAMLA PERSAD BISSESAR

7th Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

7th Chairperson of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Born: 22nd April 1952. 

Married to Gregory Bissessar.

Attended Iere High School, 

The University of the West Indies, 

Norwood Technical College (England),

and the Hugh Wooding Law School.

She has many first in our nation's history:

The first female Prime Minister.

The first female Indian Prime Minister.

The first woman to serve as Attorney General.

The first female Leader of the Opposition.

The first female Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office.

 

The Leader of the United National Congress 24th January 2010 the position she still holds.

Became the Member of Parliament for Siparia on the 6th November 1995. 

Attended the University of the West Indies, Norwood Technical College (England), and the Hugh Wooding Law School. She was awarded a B.A. (Hons.), a Diploma in Education, a B.A. of Laws (Hons.) and a Legal Education Certificate. In 2006 she obtained an Executive Masters in Business Administration (EMBA) from the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, Trinidad.

On completion of her studies, she entered the teaching profession.

While in England she worked as a social worker with the Church of England Children’s Society of London.

She taught at the St. Andrew High School in Kingston, Jamaica and at the Mona Campus in Jamaica. At the age of 25, she became the youngest lecturer.

 

Later, she taught at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.

At the Jamaica College of Insurance, she was also a Consultant Lecturer.

Lecture at a Tertiary Education Institution.

Then became a full-time Attorney-at-Law.

Entered the political arena in 1987.

Served as an alderman for St. Patrick County Council,  from 1987 until 1991.

An Opposition Senator from the 1st November 1994 to the 6th October 1995.

An Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs from the  27th November 1995 to the 2nd February 1996.

The Minister of Legal Affairs from the 3rd February 1996 to the 21st October 1999.

The Minister of Education from the 22nd October 1999 to the 11th December 2000 and again from the 12th January 2001 to the 4th October 2001.

The Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs from the 5th October 2001 to the  24th December 2001.

An Opposition Member  from the 5th April 2002 to the 28th August 2002,

Again from the 17th October 2002 to the 25th April 2006,

Again from the 17th December 2007 to the 24 February 2010.

Prime Minister from the 26th May 2010 to the 17th June 2015.

She became the Leader of the Opposition on the 26th April 2006 to the 7th November 2007​ again from the 25th February 2010 to the 25th May 2010 and again from the 15th September 2015 a position she currently holds.
